It is not a night of pure chance alone. The draw pairs sporting spectacle with careful seeding, and by the time the fixtures were confirmed, the shape of the coming months had been decided for every side involved.

How the new format works

This is the third season of UEFA's reinvented competition. Gone are the old groups of four, replaced by a single expanded league that throws all 36 teams into one giant table stretching across the autumn and winter.

Each club faces a varied slate of opponents. Every team plays eight different sides, drawn two apiece from four separate seeding pots, ensuring a mix of glamour ties and tougher, less familiar tests.

The balance of the schedule is carefully split. Of those eight league-phase matches, four are played at home and four away, so no side can lean too heavily on the comfort of its own stadium.

The scale of it all is considerable. Across the league phase the competition will serve up 144 matches in total, with 18 games on each of the eight matchdays that make up this opening stage.

The heavyweights in pot one

As ever, the top seeds read like a roll call of European royalty. Pot 1 is reported to feature Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Liverpool, among the most decorated names in the game.

They are joined by a formidable supporting cast. Inter Milan, Manchester City, Arsenal, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid complete the top pot, a lineup that underlines just how much quality is packed into the competition's upper tier.

A long road to the final

The journey begins in early autumn. The opening matchday is scheduled for 8 to 10 September, the first of eight rounds that will run through October, November and December before spilling into the new year.

The league phase then reaches its climax in winter. The final two matchdays are set for late January 2027, the point at which the table settles and the knockout picture finally comes into focus.
